A man was killed in a severe collision between two vehicles on Holtavörduheidi mountain pass, on the Ring Road in west Iceland, on Friday. The accident was likely caused by the first real snowfall this winter and icy road conditions.
According to Morgunbladid, there were five people inside the two vehicles, a pick-up truck and a passenger car, when the accident occurred.
Two of the injured were taken to the National Hospital in Reykjavík by Coast Guard helicopter; two others were transferred via ambulance to the hospital in Borgarnes.
Police from the nearby towns of Borgarnes, Búdardalur, Blönduós and Hólmavík were called to the scene, as well as a physician from Hvammstangi, Fréttabladid reports.
The road was closed while the emergency crew was operating and dozens of vehicles on both sides were at standstill at the scene of the accident until the road was reopened after more than an hour.
The road was closed again later on since the traffic was hindering the investigation of the accident.
This is the 11th traffic-related death in Iceland this year.
