Edward Snowden, who leaked information from the NSA and CIA, has applied for political asylum in Iceland. An application in Snowden’s name was yesterday faxed to the Icelandic Embassy in Moscow where he is currently located.

This was confirmed by the Icelandic Ministry for Foreign Affairs today. However, it has not yet been verified that the application was sent by Snowden himself, ruv.is reports.
The application has been forwarded to the Icelandic Ministry for the Interior. Minister of the Interior Hanna Birna Kristjánsdóttir had earlier declared that Snowden’s application will be processed the same way as all other applications for political asylum in Iceland.
Spokesperson for Wikileaks Kristinn Hrafnsson maintained last week that Snowden would apply for asylum in Ecuador instead of Iceland and that he was planning to fly there from Hong Kong through Moscow and Cuba. However, Snowden never left Moscow.
