The fake snow production system in Hlídarfjall skiing area in Akureyri, northeast Iceland, has exceeded cost estimates by ISK 32 million (USD 519,000, EUR 368,000) and ended up costing ISK 138 million (USD 2.2 million, EUR 1.6 million) in total.
The Akureyri Sport Council wants the Icelandic Winter Sports Complex to cover the cost and thus pay the entire project, Fréttabladid reports.
“A similar project has never been undertaken in Iceland before, so one could say it is a pioneer project,” the sport council said in a statement, adding the project had proven its worth. “But various difficult situations made the execution of the project more complicated than expected.”
