Snow falls in Reykjavík

Residents in Iceland’s capital woke up to white mountains and snow on the streets yesterday morning. This type of weather is known as vorhret (“spring cold spell”) and is not unusual for this time of year.

According to meteorologist Trausti Jónsson, the cold spell may last a few days and sleet and snowfall can be expected, Fréttabladid reports.

“Wind from the west has been dominant and then snow can be seen which melts almost immediately,” Jónsson explained. “Last year there was an exceptionally bad cold spell after May 20 and a lot of snow fell in the north.”

Jónsson said the temperature in May has been average.
