Two ski lifts in Mount Bláfjöll, the capital region ski resort, will open this weekend. Enough snow has fallen (20 to 30 cm) for the slopes to be safe for skiers, which rarely ever happens anymore. The other three ski resorts in Iceland that have opened use snow machines.
During this first skiing weekend only limited access will be allowed; the lifts in Mount Bláfjöll will not open until 2 pm, and the ski resort’s other lifts will remain closed until further notice. But admission will be free, Morgunbladid reports.
The skiing area’s staff has actively been working on spreading the snowdrifts which have been created around special fences on Mount Bláfjöll last week with machines to get an even and firm layer of snow in the slopes.
