Snow Falls across Iceland, Slippery Road Conditions

Reykjavík residents woke up to a cover of snow this morning and snow had also fallen in most other regions. Police ask drivers to be aware of slippery road conditions. Two mountain passes in the West Fjords are impassable, across Hrafnseyrarheiði and Dynjandisheiði.

It’s still snowing in some parts of the West Fjords, West and East Iceland, ruv.is reports. Roads leading out of the capital are icy. For an update on road conditions, go to vegag.is.

In Reykjavík, workers were called out at 3:30 am to clear roads. “We started salting the bus routes. That’s the first priority,” Þröstur Víðisson, head supervisor of the city’s winter service department, told ruv.is.

However, with continued snowfall, they had to change methods. “There was so much [snow] that we had to equip the cars with shredders and start clearing the roads,” Þröstur added.

He asked people whose cars aren’t equipped for winter conditions to leave them behind while the roads are slippery. He expected clearing and salting to be finished between 9 and 10 am.
