The Holuhraun craters are 900 meters (3,000 feet) above sea level and even though plenty of heat is being pumped out the temperature in the area is well below zero on Celsius (32°F). The lava is surrounded by snow and that makes an often beautiful effect when the heat and the cold mix.
It is expected that soon the eruption may become inaccessible by car.
During the night there were no major earthquakes. On Wednesday there was a quake of magnitude 3.9 about 4 km (3 miles) north-northeast of Bárðarbunga.
The surface above the Bárðarbunga caldera continues to sink at a steady rate, about half a meter (a foot-and-a-half) per day.
