The eleventh yule lad, Sniffer, who loves traditional Icelandic “leaf bread”, followed a distinctive smell to a bakery in Ísafjördur, the capital of Iceland’s Westfjords, but got trapped inside.
“I got a little bit scared towards the end,” Sniffer tells icelandreview.com. “It was dark inside the bakery, but the lovely smell of leaf bread comforted me,” he adds.
After being side-tracked by a stench of ammonia coming from half-processed rotten skate, Sniffer managed to locate the source of the leaf bread smell he had followed all the way from Dimmuborgir in northeast Iceland.
Sniffer snuck into the bakery just before closing and was so busy sniffing leaf bread that he didn’t notice when the employees of the bakery locked the door.
The first employee came to work at 6 am in the morning and Sniffer managed to sneak back out unnoticed. “I was really stressed out, because I still had to deliver all the presents,” Sniffer says.
“I managed to finish putting presents in shoes in only two hours, before the first child woke up, but I was pretty tired,” Sniffer admits.
Sniffer has a very large and funny nose and he picks up all kinds of smells, yet he never gets a cold, as described in Jólasveinarnir.
