Minister of Environment Svandís Svavarsdóttir inaugurated Snaefellsstofa, which is about 700 square meters and took approximately one year to build. The National Park already has guest facilities at Skaftafell and Ásbyrgi, comparable facilities at Kirkjubaejarklaustur, Hoefn and at Lake Mývatn, similar projects are planned for construction.

The total cost of Snaefellsstofa was approximately 350 million ISK. According to representatives of the National Park, the budget made in 2006 assumed that the price would be 170 million ISK, but the resulting amount is due to changes in prices.

According to the General Manager of the National Park, Thórdur H. Ólafsson, Snaefellsstofa is a fountain of knowledge regarding the eastern part of the Park and he is convinced of its importance and value.
