Snaefell First-Time Icelandic Basketball Champions

Sports club Snaefell from Stykkishólmur in west Iceland became the Icelandic champions in men’s basketball for the first time in the club’s history yesterday with a 105-69 victory over Keflavík in Keflavík’s home court.

“The whole team performed exquisitely. The defense was amazing to begin with and all players were on their toes,” Snaefell’s coach Ingi Thór Steinthórsson told Fréttabladid.

“It was incredibly sweet. We have smashed a massive icecap. We needed something special to earn the title after going the most difficult way possible,” the coach added.

Snaefell is the only team to ever make it to the top of the Icelandic championship after landing in sixth place in the league.

Snaefell began the game with a blast, leading by 20 points (27-7) after only five minutes. When the first quarter ended the score was 37-19 for Snaefell, reports.

In the second quarter, Keflavík narrowed the gap to 16 points but Snaefell struck back and scored the quarter’s last ten points, entering halftime with the score 56-30.

In the third quarter Keflavík seemed powerless. While Snaefell scored at almost every opportunity, Keflavík blew their chances.

Yet Keflavík managed to narrow the gap again to 16 points but Snaefell answered by scoring the last seven points of the third quarter, leading by 23 points when it came to an end.

The final quarter was a mere formality and Snaefell managed to end the game with a 36-point lead, making the loss even more embarrassing for Keflavík.

“We played horrendously; it was a joke. It was especially disappointing because so many people came to watch. But we did lose against the better team,” acknowledged Hördur Axel Vilhjálmsson of Keflavík, who, like most of the team’s players, was not in his best form yesterday.
