Snaefell Becomes Icelandic Basketball Champion

Team Snaefell from Stykkishólmur, on Snaefellsnes peninsula, west Iceland, became the champions in Iceland’s male basketball league for the first time with a 109-86 victory over Fjölnir from Grafarvogur, Reykjavík, yesterday.

The atmosphere was electric in Laugardalshöll in Reykjavík where the game was played. So many Stykkishólmur residents had come to watch the game that the town of 1,240 inhabitants was almost empty, Morgunbladid reports.

The women’s basketball team in Grindavík, on Reykjanes peninsula, southwest Iceland, also celebrated its first ever Icelandic championship yesterday with a 77-67 victory over Haukar from Hafnarfjördur. Their game was also played in Laugardalshöll.
