Smelter employee tries to steal half a ton of aluminum

An employee of Nordurál, the daughter company of Century Aluminum in Iceland, was caught loading aluminum bars into his car yesterday, about half a ton in total, worth about ISK 80,000 (USD 1,300, EUR 822).

“He was released temporarily from custody while the case is being investigated,” Ágúst Hafberg, assistant managing director of business development at Nordurál, told Fréttabladid.

Security guards at Nordurál suspected something was wrong when they witnessed the employee in question loading aluminum bars into his vehicle early yesterday morning.

“You can’t help being surprised. It’s not usual for employees to steal aluminum,” Hafberg said.
