SlutWalk Poster Campaign Launched

The fifth annual Reykjavík SlutWalk, Druslugangan, will be held next week, on Saturday July 25, at 2PM.

Participants will gather at Hallgrímskirkja, and together march down Skólavörðustígur and Bankastræti, down to Austurvöllur, where speakers will address the crowd, and artists will provide live music.

Posters featuring a diversity of Icelanders, and captioned “ég er drusla,” Icelandic for “I am a slut,” have been hung up in bus shelters around the city, as part of an awareness campaign sponsored by the organizers of the SlutWalk.

“Those who attend the Druslugangan (SlutWalk) represent a cross-section of Icelandic society and that is the message of this years poster campaign. Participants are of all genders, ages, and political leanings, and show their support for victims of sexual violence in action, by marching for a better society. This is why all those who support the cause are druslur (sluts). Because no one, no matter how they dress or behave, are responsible for violence perpetrated against them. We own our own selves, and are taking back the word from those who use it to inflict shame and anguish.

Take a stance. Be a slut.”

Several notable Icelanders, including Reykjavík Mayor Dagur B. Eggertsson and Bright Future MP Björt Ólafsdóttir, have taken part.

On PicBadges it’s possible to add the caption to a photo of your own choice, for those who want to participate in the social media campaign.

Below is the music video for D.R.U.S.L.A. by Reykjavíkurdætur and Halldór Eldjárn, the official anthem of last years SlutWalk.
