Skiers Crowd Slopes in Akureyri

Around 2,600 people went skiing in Hlídarfjall, the Akureyri ski resort, in north Iceland on Saturday, which comes close to being a record.

“Here everything is white from the mountaintop and down to the shore. The conditions are good as we could have hoped for,” Gudmundur Karl Jónsson, director of the Hlídarfjall skiing area, told Morgunbladid.

It is hoped that the Reykjavík ski resort in the Bláfjöll mountain range can open next weekend. Meteorologists have forecast snowfall in southwest Iceland in the latter part of this week.

Akureyri is currently celebrating a Winter Sports Festival.
