Skaftá Flood Resumes

“The flood just keeps escalating; there are no signs of it stopping. And it is still far from reaching levels which I remember having seen here,” says Gísli Halldór Magnússon, farmer at Ytri-Ásar in Skaftártunga, regarding the flood in Skaftá, which has now started once again.

When the flood began, Magnússon feared that it might not only be large but of a historical scale. He still believes that. “The difference is that the last large flood added to low water levels. But since this flood is adding to high water levels, there is danger. As this continues to grow, we can only assume the worst,” he told mbl.is.

“The water has started to surpass the capacity of its channels and flow south towards the lava field. I am certain that the same goes for other areas, causing damage and leaving behind sand and glacial mud.”
