Residents in Hvanneyri, southwest Iceland, found a bottle in their attic, containing a 60-year-old vow promising the local church a gift worth two bottles of aquavit.
Pétur Jónsson and Svava Kristjánsdóttir found the bottle when they were restoring their house recently. Fréttabladid reports.
The couple decided to fulfill the vow and donated ISK 6,000 (EUR 65, USD 86) to Hvanneyrarkirkja, the local church, on 21 November, exactly 60 years after the note had been written.
Five men had signed the note, challenging the person finding the bottle to give the local church ISK 100 (EUR 1, USD 1), which is what two bottles of aquavit cost 60 years ago.
It is not clear who the five men were, but Ingibjörg Jónasdóttir of Hvanneyrarkirkja parish, suspects that they were construction workers. The 100-year-old church is currently being repaired.
