Six Men Convicted for Major Drug Smuggling

By Iceland Review

Six men were sentenced to a total of 40 years in prison in Reykjavík District Court yesterday for having participated in the most extensive drug smuggling case in Iceland’s criminal history, which took place near the island of Papey in April last year.

Reykjavík District Court.

More than 100 kilos of narcotics were transported to Iceland on the yacht Sirtaki. The longest sentences were given to Peter Rabe and Rúnar Thór Róbertsson, each of whom are to serve ten years in prison, and Árni Hrafn Ásbjörnsson, who was given a nine-year sentence, Fréttabladid reports.

These are among the longest sentences that have ever been given in punishment for drug violations in Iceland to date. Three other men, who were involved in the crime, were sentenced to three to five years in prison each. The rulings are likely to be appealed.
