Six in Custody after Fatal Assault

By Iceland Review

Six people have been arrested on suspicion of involvement in an assault that led to the death of a man in Mosfellsdalur valley, east of Reykjavík, on Wednesday evening. All the suspects are now in custody, states RÚV.

The attack is believed to be connected to a reckoning in the underworld, stated RÚV. The suspects allegedly went to the home of the deceased on Wednesday evening and asked to speak with him. They attacked him when he came to the door, according to RÚV´s sources. The attack is said to have been brutal The man’s family, including his newborn baby, were present at the time.

The victim, who was in his thirties, was pronounced dead upon arrival at Landspítali National University Hospital in Fossvogur after the attack in Mosfellsdalur. The cause of death is not yet known, but the man was unconscious when the police arrived at his home, stated RÚV.

The suspects in custody include five men and one woman. One of the men is said to be a member of the Outlaws motorcycle club, according to RÚV. His exact involvement in the attack is not yet known, nor that of the other suspects.

Others being held in custody have also had previous dealings with the police. Two brothers arrested in connection with this case were convicted by a district court in February for a shooting incident that took place in August last year. The men were both sentenced to over two and a half years in prison for the shooting, but were appealing their convictions to the Supreme Court. The men were loose pending the decision of the Supreme Court, despite having previously been kept in custody for a period in the interest of public safety.

The Reykjavík District Court ruled Thursday that the five men be held in custody until June 23 and the woman until June 16. Police Chief Superintendent Grímur Grímsson stated that the judge had likely assessed that the woman played a smaller role in the incident than the others, and therefore ruled for a shorter period of detention.

The police investigation is in full swing and the case is being given top priority.
