Single Mother Hits Jackpot – Twice

A single mother of three with a 75 percent disability won ISK 84.5 million (USD 760,000, EUR 550,000) in the Icelandic lotto on Saturday. The woman had purchased two tickets with the same numbers that she always picks.

She bought the first ticket, valid for two Saturdays, at a gas station on the outskirts of Reykjavík but lost it so she went to an ice-cream parlor on Bústaðavegur in the eastern part of the capital to buy a new ticket with the same numbers.

When she found out that she had won she went to the lottery’s head office and told them her story. They believed her but she needed to show the other ticket that she had lost.

On her way home to turn everything upside down in her apartment she asked her late grandfather where she had lost the ticket. His answer was simple and she subsequently stopped her car and voilà the lost ticket was under her car seat.

According to, she will buy a new house, car and maybe some new furniture.

The winnings are tax free.
