Single-Family Houses in Seltjarnarnes Demolished

Five single-family houses in the Reykjavík suburb of Seltjarnarnes have been demolished and others are scheduled for demolition to make room for villas built by wealthy individuals.

The doomed single-family houses, some of which were or are located on exclusive lots by the seaside, are worth hundreds of ISK millions (ISK 100 million = USD 1.6 million, EUR 1.1 million) in total, a sum which the buyers of the lots had to pay, Fréttabladid reports.

Building officer Einar Nordfjörd pointed out that although it is expensive to tear a house down and construct a new one, it is also expensive to repair, refurnish, enlarge and renovate.

“When old houses on large lots are sold, […] real estate agents are keen to point out that there is a possibility to build a larger house on that location,” Nordfjörd said.
