Sigurður Ingi Þórðarson—better known as Siggi ‘the Hacker’—this morning confessed in court to charges of sexual abuse brought against him by nine teenage boys, RÚV reports.
His sentence will be announced in the coming weeks. Siggi is currently imprisoned for financial crimes committed while working for WikiLeaks in 2011, and is expected to serve the sentences consecutively rather than concurrently.
Siggi gained notoriety through his work with WikiLeaks in 2011 and his consequent interactions with the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation.
He is no stranger to the criminal justice system, and despite his young age—he will turn twenty-three in October—he has already been convicted of a slew of offenses, including prior instances of sexual misconduct with minors.
In October 2013, he was convicted of seduction, for deceiving a seventeen year old boy into performing sexual acts, promising him—among other things—large sums of money, and that he would be able to prevent the boy from losing his driver’s license after the boy was arrested for driving under the influence.
For this Siggi was sentenced to eight months in prison, a sentence he completed on November 2 last year. However, he was at that point under investigation for other crimes and was detained as a flight risk.
His work with WikiLeaks had ended on a sour note, and late last December he was convicted of embezzlement and fraud in the Reykjavík District Court and sentenced to two years in prison as well as ordered to repay WikiLeaks ISK 7 million (USD 56,000; EUR 45,000) and to cover all legal costs for both parties.
Earlier this summer he was then charged with rape, sexual misconduct involving deception and soliciting prostitution—with all instances involving minors. Eleven cases were initially under investigation, but charges were only levied in nine. All of them occurred between 2010 and 2013.
The boys were all teenagers when the crimes took place, and some were younger than fifteen—the Icelandic age of consent.
The fact that some of the crimes were committed after Siggi was charged in the previously mentioned case involving the seventeen year old, impacted his sentencing, as investigators believed it showed him to be unrepentant, Vísir reports.
A psychiatrist who evaluated Siggi declared him fit to stand trial for his actions, but in all likelihood a sociopath.
