Shorty deprived of pans

Shorty found nothing but clean frying pans on his search for leftovers as he came to town last night. He has a habit of scraping pans and eating burnt scraps of food.

“I’m a sweet tooth,” Shorty tells, referring to scorched leftovers that not many would consider sweets.

As people increasingly use ovens and microwaves to cook their food, or simply buy it ready made, Shorty didn’t find any dirty pans on stoves in Iceland, only clean ones hidden inside cupboards. Jú reports.

Shorty did, however, fulfill his duty of putting a surprise in children’s shoes in windowsills all over Iceland.

Shorty is, as the name indicates, by far the shortest of the 13 yule lad brothers. His shortness used to come in handy when sneaking into houses and snatching pans, as described in Jólasveinarnir.

But being short can also be troublesome. Shorty has to wake up earlier than the rest of the yule lads, because it takes him much longer to hike to town. He has to take four steps for each step his brothers take, and six steps for every step the long-legged Gully Gawk takes.

Shorty manages to make up for his shortness with a huge ego. He often credits himself for something he didn’t do. “I composed all the Christmas carols,” Shorty once told Later he admitted that he had only helped writing some of the lyrics.
