Shortage of Rooms in Reykjavík for DesignMarch

Guests for the upcoming 2013 DesignMarch (HönnunarMars) festival have reportedly been having trouble finding accommodation in Reykjavík due to the rising popularity of winter tourism in Iceland.

According to Fréttablaðið, lodging facilities are available but some groups have had to divide themselves between different accommodation facilities.

Director of the festival, Halla Helgadóttir, says many guests are expected this year but that traditionally March has been considered off-season. “DesignMarch is held in March because there is very little happening in Iceland for tourists at that time. This was considered ‘off-season’ but it seems that this is longer the case.”

“We don’t charge entry for the festival so we don’t have a detailed overview of the number of guests. We however know that there are many foreign guests who come to the festival,” Halla added.

Visitors to Iceland in November and December 2012 increased by 30 percent compared to 2011 and twice as many people visited Iceland last month compared to the same time last year.

DesignMarch will be held for the fifth time March 14-16.
