The incident for which the man was convicted took place in his home in May 2010. The girl was there because she was on a team that the man coached, ruv.is reports.

The girl’s mother reported the incident to social affairs authorities. Her daughter had described how the man had groped her underneath her clothes.

The investigation of the case was in the hands of the Reykjavík Metropolitan Police. The man had maintained his innocence and was acquitted of the charges in the district court in March 2011.

The case was appealed to the Supreme Court of Iceland, which annulled the previous verdict and referred it back to the district court, which has now found the man guilty. He is also to cover all legal costs.
