Severe storm wreaks havoc throughout Iceland

By Iceland Review

Widespread damage to property resulted when a severe storm blew across Iceland in the early hours of Sunday morning and beyond. As the storm moved from west to east, search and rescue teams were inundated with calls for assistance. Details were reported in all the main media.

Damage included roofing being blown from buildings, objects such as barbecues, trampolines and garden sheds blowing away and boats and ships being torn from piers where they were moored. All domestic and international flights were disrupted. Planes arriving in Iceland from the United States were directed to Glasgow, where some 500 passengers waited for the storm to dissipate. Further disruptions are expected today as schedules get back on track.

Two ships came loose at the harbor in Hafnarfjördur yesterday morning and drifted in the direction of nearby breakwater, before stranding on a sand bottom. Meanwhile, in the Mödrudalsöraefi area, in the Icelandic outback, car windows were shattered by blowing rocks. No injuries to people were reported.
