Seventy-Six Laid Off at Contractor Companies

Seventy-six employees of contractor companies will be given notice tomorrow due to a foreseen lack of projects, mbl.is reports. Fifty will be made redundant from Ístak, and twenty-six from Eykt.

The resignations will come into effect on October 1st but the companies hope that they may be retracted before that time should new projects arrive.

Árni Jóhannsson, manager of construction at the Federation of Icelandic Industries, told Morgunbladid that the resignations don’t come as a surprise. “We are very saddened by this. We are aware of the situation and have been pointing it out. Some believed that we were crying wolf but now it has arrived and begun to eat. This is what happens when everything has ground to a halt,” said Jóhannsson who was not optimistic about the near future.
