Seven members of the environment protection organization Saving Iceland were arrested on Monday while protesting against the operations of Reykjavík Energy (OR) on Hellisheidi heath outside the city where OR is drilling for geothermal energy.
About 20 protesters locked themselves to heavy machinery and erected flags reading: “Away from Hellisheidi and Yemen.” The protestors turned off the power for the drill Týr and refused to comply with police demands, Morgunbladid reports.
Police therefore arrested four men and three women participating in the protest, who came from the US, Britain, Belgium, Denmark, Holland and Sweden. They were taken to prison in Selfoss.
Police say the protesters caused considerable financial damage with their actions.
