Seven New Icelandic Names Approved

The Icelandic Naming Committee has added five new first names and two middle names to the register of approved names, mbl.is reports.

For boys, the newly approved first names are Geimar and Brimþór; for girls, the first names Ljóney, Íselín, and Guðna. Two names that have not been previously used as first names for girls or boys were approved as middle names: Rokk and Hörgdal.

Only one name—Andrej—was rejected by the committee when the most recent rulings were handed down. According to the committee, the name rejected because it does not conform to Icelandic spelling conventions: the diphthong ‘ej’ would generally be written as ‘ei’ or ‘ey’ in Icelandic. However, as of yet, neither ‘Andrei’ or ‘Andrey’ has been added to the register of approved names either.
