Sadly, December 26 was a day of tragic events.
A man, believed to have fallen into Ölfusá river, South Iceland, early morning December 26, is no longer expected to be found alive, RÚV reports. More than one hundred search and rescue workers searched for him yesterday, the second day in a row. The search will continue for the next few days.
One person died and five were injured in a car accident in Öræfi, Southeast Iceland, on Saturday, RÚV reports. Two cars collided by a single-lane bridge over Hólá river, east of Hnappavellir. All six people involved in the accident were foreign tourists. Five were transported by helicopter to Landspítali National University Hospital following the accident, where two were released after examination. The other three were hospitalized overnight, but are not believed to be seriously injured. The road was icy when the accident occurred. South Iceland Police are investigating how it happened.
The accident brings the number of traffic-related fatalities to 16 this year. That’s the highest number of such fatalities since 2009, when 17 people lost their lives in traffic accidents.
Two young girls were transported by med flight to Reykjavík on Saturday, following a serious snowmobile accident by a farm in East-Húnavatnssýsla county, North Iceland, RÚV reports. The girl who drove the snowmobile is seriously injured after losing control of the vehicle, causing it to land under a hay wagon. The girls were transported by ambulance to Sauðárkrókur and from there by med flight to Reykjavík.
One of the girls was released from Landspítali National University Hospital yesterday, but the other one remains in intensive care. Her condition is reported to be stable.
