Senior Citizen Creates Culture Center in South Iceland

Árni Valdimarsson, a senior citizen and a resident of Eyrarbakki, a small town in south Iceland, bought a defunct fish freezing plant two years ago and is currently working on renovating it as a community culture center.

“While people are healthy they should be active and participate in discussions,” Valdimarsson told Morgunbladid, adding that he hoped his initiative would help Eyrarbakki reclaim its spot on Iceland’s tourist map. “Eyrarbakki was the first city in Iceland.”

Valdimarsson’s culture center will include a flea market, an art gallery, a coffee shop, a district museum, a cinema and apartments and workshops for senior citizens who are interested in being part of his community.
