Security Cameras in Capital to Increase

The number of security cameras in Reykjavík will increase and older cameras will be replaced.

Twelve new cameras will be installed and there are discussions about further increasing the number in the future.

Deputy Police Commissioner at Reykjavík Metropolitan Police, Hörður Jóhannesson, told that the existing cameras date back to 1998 and are in need of being replaced.

According to Hörður, only three or four of the cameras are currently functional and the changes in technology mean that the new cameras are more advanced and efficient in monitoring incidences of violence.

“This is not about control of people but the cameras are there for when you need to see something,” Hörður said.
