Secret US Documents on Icelandic Politicians Leaked

Secret documents about Icelandic Prime Minister Jóhanna Sigurdardóttir, Foreign Minister Össur Skarphédinsson (pictured) and former Icelandic Ambassador to the US Albert Jónsson that were kept at the United States Department of State were recently leaked to WikiLeaks.

Skarphédinsson is dissatisfied with such secret documents having been made public and has called for an explanation. “It is the second time within a short time span that secret documents that were written unilaterally by American diplomats were leaked this way. We need an explanation for why such documents are lying around for all to see,” the minister told Morgunbladid.

In one of the documents Prime Minister Sigurdardóttir is described as highly popular and it is stated that she has always supported the defense cooperation with the US. Other Icelandic politicians say she is “resolute and sometimes impatient and tends to act on her own.”

Skarphédinsson is described as “fond of America and said to have had close ties to the US Embassy for many years.” But sometimes his position is in opposition with that of the US government, another document states.

Jónsson is said to be easily offended when he feels Icelanders aren’t being treated equally to other allies. “In private conversations he objected to explanations for the alleged use of CIA aircraft in Icelandic airspace weren’t received until after three weeks and that they were, in his opinion, unsatisfactory. Yet he worked with US diplomats on reducing the matter’s importance publicly,” the third document says.
