Search for Missing Woman Continues

The search for Birna Brjánsdóttir, the 20-year-old Icelandic woman who has been missing since Saturday morning, continues. This morning, rescue workers searched the area around Hafnarfjörður harbor, but have now moved the search to the street Flatahraun in Hafnarfjörður, where her phone appears to have been turned off on Saturday morning, and around Urriðakotsvatn lake, near Heiðmörk, because of a tip about a hole in the ice, according to RÚV.

The search area now extends from Garðakirkja church in the north to Straumsvík in the south. Between 60 and 70 people take part in the search today, according to RÚV.

Although it hasn’t been verified, the police assume that a pair of shoes, found by volunteers near Hafnarfjörður harbor last night, belongs to Birna. “We find it very likely to be the case, and that’s our assumption,” stated Chief Superintendent Grímur Grímsson.

The pair of shoes was discovered near the storage facility of Atlantsolía, by Hvaleyrarlón. The police noted that there was snow on the soles of the shoes, although there was no snow in the capital area on Saturday morning.

Grímur admitted that many questions remain unanswered, including whether the shoes were planted where they were found. “Or whether they had been there since Saturday morning , or whether they arrived later,” Grímur added.

The police have repeatedly asked those who were on Laugavegur on Saturday morning around 5:25 to contact them at +354 444-1000, since they could provide essential information for the investigation.
