Search and Rescue Saves Tourists from Highland Road

By Iceland Review

Search and rescue association Blanda from Blönduós, Northwest Iceland, was called out shortly after 3 am last night because of a small rental Renault Megane which was stuck on the highland road across Kjölur north of Hveravellir.

The two men in the car, tourists from Switzerland, were on their way between Reykjavík and Akureyri and believed that the Kjölur road was passable, reports.

Their car was not equipped for driving on highland roads and all highland roads are currently impassable, as can be seen on the website of the Icelandic Road Administration,

The mobile phone contact with the men was poor and they were unable to explain to the search and rescue team exactly where they were.

However, the team managed to reach the men safely. On the way to Blönduós the weather deteriorated with a full-blown snowstorm and poor visibility. They arrived at 8:30 this morning. The tourists were grateful for the rescue.
