Search and Rescue Find Lost Tourist

Members of search and rescue Víkverji in Vík in South Iceland were called out on Monday evening after a foreign tourist didn’t board a bus he had booked a fare with. The man had intended to hike across Reynisfjall mountain and walk Reynisfjara beach earlier in the day.

The man was found by the first search party in the mountain near ground level. He was cold but was otherwise unharmed. The hike had taken longer than he expected. The weather conditions were bad, it was windy and snowing and the visibility was poor, a press release from ICE-SAR search and rescue association stated.

Travelers in Iceland are encouraged to report their travel plans to the employees of hotels and tour operators. They can also take advantage of the website safetravel.is. It’s always advisable to follow weather forecasts, for example on vedur.is.
