Search and Rescue Assist Drivers on Ring Road

Search and rescue association Húni from Hvammstangi, Northwest Iceland, was called out to assist drivers who had run into trouble in blizzard conditions on mountain pass Holtavörðuheiði, which is part of the Ring Road, yesterday afternoon and evening.

Chair of Húni Gunnar Örn Jakobsson, told ruv.is that some cars had been unable to drive up Hæðarsteinsbrekka at the pass’ highest point and had to be towed. Two trucks had become stuck on the edge of the road and a road grader was needed to tow them loose.

Last night a bus ran off the road near Hvammstangi and Húni was called out again to assist the passengers. They were unharmed but the bus couldn’t drive any further.

Drivers also ran into trouble on Víkurskarð mountain pass, which is part of the Ring Road in Northeast Iceland, yesterday evening. Two trucks became stuck.

There’s outlook for continued snowfall in North Iceland and a storm warning has been issued for Southeast Iceland today.
