Search and Rescue Assist Drivers on Mountain Pass

Search and rescue associations from Hvammstangi and Borgarfjörður in North and West Iceland were called out late yesterday evening to assist drivers on Holtavörðuheiði mountain pass, which is part of the Ring Road, due to dismal weather conditions.

A truck had become stuck in the middle of the road, blocking traffic and leaving other commuters stranded. The search and rescue volunteers assisted people driving down from the mountain pass, where a blizzard was raging, coupled with icy road conditions, ruv.is reports.

Holtavörðuheiði was reopened after the truck was removed last night. Öxnadalsheiði further to the north remains closed, as do some other mountain passes across the country.

Snowfall and strong wind is also forecast for today and tomorrow. Go to vedur.is for weather updates and to vegag.is for information on road conditions.
