The Northeast District Court has sentence two men to prison for stealing frozen seafood and bird meat.
The theft took place in November and the value of the ‘hot’ frozen goods was estimated at ISK 700,000 (EUR 5,901/USD 6,308).
One man was sentenced to three months’ prison and the other man to two. They both pleaded guilty.
The two men worked together to break into a freezer container outside Hnýfill fish factory in Akureyri, from which they took frozen food including fish cakes, fish in orly dough, langoustines, halibut fillets and salted cod cheeks. They also took puffin and guillemot breasts, Vísir reported.
The court’s sentencing took into account that the company did not lose out significantly in financial terms, thanks to the fact that most of the loot was recovered. It also noted that the men worked together on the crime.
If the punishment seems harsher than some lenient penalties reported elsewhere on this website, it is because the men both have significant criminal records already, so it was decided a suspended sentence would be inappropriate—not least because one of the men broke the conditions of an outstanding suspended sentence to commit the crime.
