Scorsese reads Laxness’ Independent People

Academy Award winning director Martin Scorsese told Icelandic cinema owner Árni Samúelsson on Monday that he is currently reading Independent People by Icelandic author and Nobel Prize winner Halldór Laxness.

Samúelsson and his wife Gudný Björnsdóttir met Scorsese in New York after the premiere of his documentary Shine a Light about the Rolling Stones, Fréttabladid reports.

Samúelsson said Scorsese had expressed an interest in traveling to Iceland and to be present when his documentary premieres in the country. “He will be in Europe at the time of the premiere so I told him it would be easy to drop by in Iceland.”

The cinema owner said he would do everything he can to enable a visit from Scorsese. Shine a Light premieres in Iceland September 21.
