Saving Iceland Rejects Grant from Reykjavík Energy

Environment protection organization Saving Iceland, which is currently organizing a protest camp against power plants and aluminum smelters on Hellisheidi heath between Reykjavík and Selfoss, has rejected an offer of financial support from Reykjavík Energy (OR).

Vice-chairman of OR, Ásta Thorleifsdóttir, told Fréttabladid that she admires the vision of the Saving Iceland organization.

Thorleifsdóttir therefore asked members of the organization whether they had considered applying for a grant from OR, which has supported environment protection organizations before, like Landvernd.

“It is very useful to have the viewpoints of such organizations,” Thorleifsdóttir said, adding that OR benefits from criticism.

But Saving Iceland representatives told Thorleifsdóttir that the organization would never accept money from her company.
