Saving Iceland rallies protesters

The group Saving Iceland, which among other things was responsible for arranging protests against the Kárahnjúkavirkjun dam project and aluminum smelter in east Iceland this summer, has called for further protests on 1 September. This is reported by RÚV online.

On its website, the group calls the day an “International day of action against the Icelandic State and Alcoa” and urges people to show up at Icelandic embassies or consulates worldwide to voice their opposition to heavy industry in the Icelandic highlands. The group also publishes a list of companies associated with the construction, urging people to protest at their offices also.

The Hálsalón reservoir, created by the Kárahnjúkavirkjun dam, is set to be filled with water at the end of September, submerging a large section of the Icelandic highlands.
