Sara Björk Gunnarsdóttir, captain of the Icelandic women’s football team who has played for German team Wolfsburg since 2016, has made the FIFPro World XI shortlist, RÚV reports. The shortlist recognizes the top female footballers in the world, creating a ‘team of the year’ based on votes from professional footballers.
Per the description on the FIFPro website: “More than 4,100 female players acting at the highest level in 45 countries worldwide voted for this year’s World XI. It is the third time that FIFPro organizes this unique poll, which invites female top footballers to select one goalkeeper, four defenders, three midfielders and three attackers.”
The shortlist is comprised of the five goalkeepers, 20 defenders, 15 midfielders and 15 attackers who received most votes. FIFPro will announce the eleven players who have made the final list next Thursday, March 8th, which is also International Women’s Day.
