Sales of Bottled Water Soar

“We sell a lot of water, regular tapwater,” Guðmundur Hafsteinsson, store manager of the 10-11 express supermarket in Austurstræti, told Morgunblaðið yesterday.

Tourists and locals alike buy the bottled water, and according to Guðmundur their reasoning is rarely based on any misconceptions regarding the water’s origins or quality, but purely on comfort.

“They seem to know [that it’s the same water]. But for some reason they still grab a bottle.”

He points to tour bus trips departing from downtown Reykjavík, near the store, as a likely reason for tourists’ continued demand for bottled water. Growing demand among locals, however, is more perplexing.

“I think that domestic demand is growing. It’s a bit strange, but I’ve noticed more and more [Icelanders] buying bottled water.”
