Sale of Electric Cars Nearly Doubled in 2017

Sales of electric cars in Iceland nearly doubled in the past year and experts anticipate that there will be an even further increase in sales in 2018, reports Vísir. Waivers on excise duties and taxes are thought to have contributed to rising demand.

Car sales in Iceland flourished in 2017, with record-breaking sales of new cars. The market for electronic cars has particularly increased in recent years. Where only 227 electronic cars were sold in 2016, there were 415 of them sold in 2017—an 86% increase.

Environmentally friendly vehicles are, in general, an increasingly popular choice for Icelandic drivers. According to Loftur Ágústsson, director of marketing at car dealership BL, there’s been a tenfold increase in the number of hybrid vehicles sold in just the last two years.
