Safe Places at the Eruption

By Iceland Review

At the Fimmvörduháls eruption site two hills have been designated as safe places for the two craters. This added security comes after a second fissure opened Wednesday night. The lava stream has increased considerably after the second crater opened up.

Police and rescue squads stress the importance of following rules at the site. There is still considerable traffic to the location and sometimes drivers have not been considerate of those who are standing at the watching places.

This creates considerable danger for the people who are on foot. Drivers should park below the hills to reduce the risk of accidents. The GPS-coordinates for the first hill are: N 63°38.188 V 19°26.589. For the second hill the coordinates are: N 63°37.945 – V 19°26.991. This should make them easy to find for all equipped with a GPS-measuring device.
