Russian flag theft not funny

The Russian ambassador in Iceland, Viktor Tatarintsev, announced yesterday that the three Icelandic men who stole a flag from the Russian Embassy last Friday night should be punished.

Tatarintsev met with Grétar Már Sigurdsson, the undersecretary of the Foreign Ministry yesterday, to discuss the theft of the Russian flag from his embassy. This is reported in all the main media.

Three young men admitted to taking the flag, which to them was a silly prank caused by drunkenness. They returned it undamaged to the police on Sunday and apologized for their behavior.

The “prank” could cost the men dearly. According to the Icelandic law they could face up to six years in prison for insulting a foreign state publicly.
