A female seal has gotten itself into a tight situation close to the island Surtsey, with a blue rope wrapped around its neck, restricting its airway. According to Þórdís Vilhelmína Bragadóttir from Iceland’s Environmental Agency, the seal often comes to the island to rest.
Þórdís and her team have attempted to remove the rope from the seal’s neck with nearby equipment, although the seal keeps resisting the rescue attempts. The seal was noticed by a team of people currently working on drilling a hole into the island of Surtsey for research purposes.
Further rescue attempts are planned over the next few days granted that conditions are deemed suitable.
