Road in South Iceland Broken Due to Flood Risk

It has been decided to break the road east of the bridge across the Markarfljót river on the Ring Road, Iceland’s highway no. 1, to prevent the bridge from being destroyed in the upcoming flood caused by the volcanic eruption on Eyjafjallajökull glacier.

It is estimated that the flood will reach the bridge in about a half an hour, mbl.is reports.

A powerful digger is now in the area. Other heavy machinery owned by the contractor Sudurverk are located close by, which are being used for harbor construction in Bakkafjara. The camp has been evacuated because of the volcanic eruption.
