Road fatality traced to Culture Night fireworks

A fatal accident on Saturday night, in which two vehicles collided after a horse ran across the road, is thought to have been indirectly caused by the fireworks display ending the Reykjavík Culture Night festivities. This is reported in all the main online media today.

The accident took place around midnight on Saturday evening on Vesturlandsvegur, between Reykjavík and Mosfellsbaer. Horses are notoriously spooked by fireworks and according to a man who first arrived on the scene, it appeared that all horses in the area were terrified. The fireworks were shot from a ship anchored off the north shore of Reykjavík. A man of around 50 years of age was killed in the accident and another is seriously injured in hospital.
