Road to East Iceland Village Finally Reopens

The road to Mjóifjörður village (the only road on the map marked as ‘difficult driving’) in East Iceland was opened yesterday after being closed for half a year because of snow; the road was covered in up to five meters of snow.

The only way to travel to the village was by ferry from Neskaupstaður.

As for road conditions in other parts of the country, the highland roads are still closed. The famous waterfall of Dettifoss is only accessible from the new road on the west side of the waterfall from Ring Road 1 while the roads to the waterfall from Ásbyrgi are still closed.

All the main roads around Iceland are green, indicating the best possible conditions. Red is for closed roads.
